Airline industry trade organization Airlines for America (A4A) is projecting that 28.5 million passengers will travel on U.S. airlines during the 12-day Thanksgiving air-travel period, up 3 percent from 2016. The 2.38 million passengers per day expected to take to the skies represent an increase of 69,000 from the 2016 Thanksgiving travel period. Following an accident in 2009 which fatally injured 50 people aboard a Colgan Air airliner, the U.S. Congress put in place new requirements for airline pilots requiring a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight time to become a First Officer for an airline. Previously, that lower limit was 250 hours. Military pilots can qualify for an airline position with 750 hours, and graduates of a four-year college program can qualify with 1,000 hours.

NASA has concluded a flight test series to investigate technologies that may significantly reduce airframe noise for communities near airports.
