Aviation Industry Plans Campaign To Fight 'Flight Shaming'

Potential Passengers Reportedly Concerned About The Environmental Impact Of Flying

A movement that began in Sweden around environmental activists like teenager Greta Thunberg has the potential to weaken demand for airline travel by "flight shaming" ... but the airline industry is planning to fight back.

Reuters reports that the IATA is coordinating an effort among industry stakeholders to point out the gains the industry has made on reducing the carbon footprint of the industry. Speaking in November in Kuwait, IATA head Alexandre de Juniac said the organization was planning a "very, very big campaign."

De Juniac said that there has been "misleading information" in the press and elsewhere about the environmental impact of the aviation industry. He said that flight shaming has already had some impact on demand in Europe. The impact is most pronounced in northern Europe, but the effects are being felt in the U.K., France and Germany.

Commercial aviation is responsible for an estimated 2.5 percent of global carbon emissions, but that is projected to rise as air travel increases.

IATA will coordinate planning of the campaign with the Air Transport Action Group. No launch date for the campaign has been set.
