A simple rule... one made very clear in all the training pilots receive here and around the world is that if you can not proceed under Visual Flight Rules, and are not IFR-rated and current, then one should should not proceed into IFR conditions. Many unwary pilots break these rules - those that do are thereupon sorted into two categories... lucky to be alive and unlucky to be dead. It's simple basic judgment... or so we once thought.

FAA Could Close 20 Regional Facilities

The FAA is moving forward with a controversial proposal that would shutter 20 weather offices at regional air traffic control centers, and serve up weather information from two centrally located facilities in Maryland and Missouri. The move immediately drew fire from unions representing both Weather Service employees and air traffic controllers.

Company Says More Orders Cancelled

In a letter to employees posted publicly Thursday in "The Wichita Eagle," Cessna CEO Jack Pelton said more layoffs were inevitable, but did not say how many employees of the company would lose their jobs. Cessna Aircraft Company is the nation's largest manufacturer of corporate jets. Cessna has laid off 44 percent of its workforce since November of last year.

NASA Selects 4 Proposals To Study Radiation Risks

NASA has selected four proposals for research to help understand space radiation's effects on humans living in space. NASA selected proposals from the New York University School of Medicine in New York, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Houston, Loma Linda University in California and Georgetown University in Washington.

Boeing, Airbus Both Being Considered

United Airlines will negotiate with Boeing and Airbus for an aircraft order that one industry insider said may call for 150 planes. Both companies were asked this week to submit bids. UAL Corp., United's parent company, said it may place an order by the end of the year.
