Hawaii's Island Air Asks For Return Of Pilot Bonuses

About 45 Pilots Received The Payouts In Error

About 45 pilots flying for Hawaii-based Island Air must have felt like the company went from Santa Claus to Ebenezer Scrooge when they were given Christmas bonuses ... only to have the company ask for them to be returned.

The regional airline paid out bonuses of $4,000 each to its pilots in October, but then notified those pilots that the payout was "premature" ... and told them to return the money. The company plans to take a payroll action to recover the premature payments, according to a report from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The pilots had an agreement with the airline for the bonuses to be paid when new airplanes were delivered, but that delivery was delayed. Neither the type of aircraft or details of the agreement was reported.

Those bonuses, which amounted to about $180,000 overall, may still be paid when the airplanes are delivered, but the paper reports that the Honolulu-based regional carrier has lost money in each quarter since it was acquired by billionaire Larry Ellison in 2013.
