Airborne 04.26.19: Tamarack Emergency AD, Tree Landing, D-Day Squadron

Also: Skydiver's Lost & Found, Sikorsky S-70 Training, F-16 Production Line, Commercial Drone Delivery

EASA has issued an emergency AD for Cessna Citation jets with Tamarack ATLAS active winglets installed. According to the AD (2019-0086-E), the active load alleviation system (ATLAS), when operational, deflects the Tamarack active control surfaces (TACS) on the outboard wings. Recently, occurrences have been reported in which ATLAS appears to have malfunctioned, causing upset events where, in some cases, the pilots had difficulty to recover the airplane to safe flight. Investigation continues to determine the cause(s) for the reported events. This condition, if not corrected, could lead to loss of control of the airplane. Faint Seismic Signal Recorded April 6

NASA's Mars InSight lander has measured and recorded for the first time ever a likely "marsquake." The faint seismic signal, detected by the lander's Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) instrument, was recorded on April 6, the lander's 128th Martian day, or sol. This is the first recorded trembling that appears to have come from inside the planet, as opposed to being caused by forces above the surface, such as wind. Scientists still are examining the data to determine the exact cause of the signal.

Airborne 04.24.19: Northrop N-9M Down, Paid Flt Training, AF Pilot Shortage

Tragedy has struck the warbird community as the last remaining Northrop N-9M, restored and flown by the Planes of Fame Museum, was lost in an accident in Norco, CA. The aircraft appears to have impacted, after witness reports of some kind of power outage, in a nearby prison yard, where the debris and fire damage seems to have all but consumed the aircraft. The pilot did not not survive. The single seat, twin-engine, Northrop N-9M was built as something of a development platform for Northrop's flying wing ambitions.
