DOT Requires Immediate Reporting Of Incidents To ATC

An FAA database shows that lasers were directed at aircraft cockpits over 900 times in 2008, and pilots have occasionally been temporarily blinded by the incidents, according to a report in The Boston Globe. In some instances, pilots have reported having to abort landings.

Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 IDS Available Next Year

Hawker Beechcraft Services (HBS) announced Tuesday it is taking pre-orders for the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 Integrated Display System (IDS) for installation on Beechcraft 1900D aircraft. The upgrade is expected to be available third quarter 2010.

Collaboratively developed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT), WAAS is used to combat the ionosphere disturbances, clock drift, and satellite orbit errors that prevent basic GPS signals from meeting the FAA requirements necessary for precision flight approach. Through its system of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the continental United States and Hawaii, WAAS utilizes collected data to create a GPS signal correction that is then broadcast to WAAS-enabled receivers. The result is a GPS accuracy improvement of approximately three meters 95% of the time.

Will Ask For 10% Below 2005 Levels By 2015

Industry analysts expect the European Union to propose that aviation cut its so-called greenhouse gas emissions back to 90% of 2005 levels over the next decade. The proposal could come at the climate talks slated for Bangkok. Aviation was not covered by the Kyoto protocol.
