FAA Administrator Babbitt Expresses Urgency For NextGen

Tells RTCA Forum "We Have To Get This Launched"

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt delivered remarks to the RTCA Forum on NextGen Tuesday, saying the reality of problems with the air traffic control system is not reality TV. "That really is the taxpayer sitting there 16th in line," Babbitt said in his prepared remarks.

Enrollment Has More Than Doubled In Two Years

Elizabeth City State University in northeastern North Carolina has seen its aviation sciences degree programs grow from just 17 students in 2007 to about 50 enrolled this year, according to program Director Anthony Sharp. The growth comes despite state budget cuts that have slowed the growth of the program.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources lost its aviation unit to budget cuts this year, so the state-owned Bell 206 BII Jet Ranger has gone on the online auction block. American and Delta Airlines are eyeing an investment in Japan Air Lines, Asia's largest carrier in terms of revenue. But the airline lost approximately $1 billion in the 2nd quarter of 2009, and hopes to secure a government-backed 100 billion yen credit line.

The NTSB has determined that pilot error was the cause of a 2007 incident in which two people were killed when a Cessna 500 skidded off a wet runway during landing, hit a house adjacent to the airport, and exploded on impact.

Says ANG Is Critical To Sustaining Global Partnerships

Citing evolving missions and shrinking budgets, the Air Force chief of staff is calling for the Air National Guard and active-duty forces to work closer together. "The skill set of National Guard members is critical to sustaining worldwide partnerships," Air Force Gen. Norton A. Schwartz said during a speech.
