Bush Administration Wants To Avert Full-Blown Pension
Crisis
If bankrupt United Airlines bails out on its pension obligations
to employees, the Bush administration is worried that it could
touch off a full-blown pension crisis in corporate America. The
Rocky Mountain News reports the White House is now considering
legislation that would prevent the airline from reneging on its
promise to take care of its retirees.
It seemed like the perfectly normal thing to do. The pilot of a
1948 Auster J1-N landed in a cow field near Hereford, England, over
the weekend for a meal at a local pub. But it was the plane that
ended up on the menu.
Runways at the nation’s airports are getting safer for the
second year in a row. Runway incursions dropped 20 percent over a
four-year period, according to an FAA report released today. US
airports recorded 324 incursions last year, of which just 32 were
characterized as high risk. Those serious incidents have dropped 50
percent since 2000. For the second consecutive year, none of the
most serious incursions involved two large commercial jets.

A pilot's loss of situational awareness caused two F-16 Fighting
Falcons to collide May 17, according to a report Air Force
officials released Aug. 30. The lead pilot, of the Indiana Air
National Guard’s 113th Fighter Squadron in Terre Haute, was
killed in the crash. The pilot of the second aircraft, also
assigned to the 113th FS, safely ejected and suffered minor
injuries. The aircraft, with a combined value of about $39.8
million, were destroyed.
Mark Strub is a caring man always willing to help a person in
need. That's the word from friends of the 42-year old Wisconsin
pilot whose 1941 Stearman PT-13 went down in Nepco Lake Saturday
while he was giving rides during a balloon rally. His passenger,
39-year old Kimberly Reed of Eau Claire (MI), was killed.

Earth and a mid-air helicopter catch over the Utah desert, a
spacecraft carrying tiny pieces of the Sun should reach Houston

"We don't believe that a company that has $2 billion in cash and
over $5 billion in assets should be terminating pension plans. We
don't think the PBGC (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation) was
established to pay pensions for companies with those kinds of
assets."
