Airborne-UnCrewed 05.24.22: USAF and DRL, Amazon Drones, UK’s ‘Angel’

Also: Pilotless Airplane--Oooppps, Surf Air Mobility, Starliner Docks, Easy Aerial

The United States Air Force (USAF) and the Drone Racing League (DRL) have apparently expanded their efforts to accelerate the recruiting and training of drone pilots, in the hopes of supplying new talent to the USAF.

For the past five seasons, the USAF has renewed its partnership with the DRL, capitalizing on the latter’s expertise in marketing and attracting talent for its annual first-person view (FPV) drone racing competitions. Amazon received Part 135 Air Carrier Certification in August 2020. In Jun 2021, an Amazon ‘Prime Air’ drone crashed in eastern Oregon, sparking 25+ acre fire. Another test flight weeks later resulted in a crash when the drone’s motors failed in flight, causing it to hurtle 150+ feet to the ground. The MK27 drones they seem to favor weigh almost 90lbs, and have the potential to cause significant injury or possibly death to the unwitting. Altitude Angel, a Unified Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider announced the planned deployment of aviation-grade Airborne Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) sensors to create a broader network of ADS-B data. The effort seeks to build on technologies that are incorporated into solutions and also enable integration of automated drones into the U.K. airspace. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-UnCrewed!!!
