Elaine Chao Tapped By Trump For Secretary Of Transportation

Led The Labor Department Under President George W. Bush

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Elaine Chao, the former Labor Secretary, to be the Secretary of Transportation in his administration.

Politico reports that multiple sources have confirmed the choice, which will be officially announced later today.

Chao is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Prior to taking the Labor Department post, Chao was deputy secretary of transportation under the second President Bush.

If confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first Asian-American woman to hold a cabinet-level post.

Trump has said that transportation infrastructure is one of his top priorities as President, and wants to spend up to $1 trillion on infrastructure projects, including the nation's airports.

Trump met with Chao back on November 21 to discuss the position, according to the New York Times.
