Like lovers to Paris, swallows to Capistrano or lemmings to the
sea, it's AOPA Expo time in Frederick, MD, and the rain appears to
be returning to where it's roosted for the past two years at this
time. Even so, the show WILL go on -- and AOPA says it'll be a
great one.
ANN REAL TIME NEWS -- 1555 EDT: A Virgin Atlantic Airbus
A340-600 landed safely at Halifax, Nova Scotia on Friday after its
transponder somehow emitted a code indicating the plane had been
hijacked. There was no immediate word on what activated the alarm
-- only that the crew and nearly 300 people on board were
safe.
One Rescued In Water; Three Others Still Missing In Costa
Rica
The bodies of two people have been found near the wreckage of a
single-engine aircraft (type unknown) after the aircraft went down
near the Costa Rican coast.
A 60-day on-site FAA investigation of the New York Terminal
Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility found that it is more than
adequately staffed for safe operations and that local
union-controlled scheduling practices are inefficient and wasteful,
creating overtime costs that are more than double any other air
traffic control facility in the country. The investigation also
found recent management attempts to curb wasteful practices were
met with resistance, followed by anonymous reports of "operational
errors."
The award-winning EAA Television Department has been busy the
past several months shooting Wings to Adventure, an aviation series
set to premiere this month on The Outdoor Channel 2HD, its new high
definition channel. The program will also air on TOC's regular
cable channel for those who don't receive HD programming, and EAA
AirVenture visitors can catch a special viewing on July 30 at
Theater in the Woods.
FAA Sends Letters Of Acceptance To EAA, Rainbow Aviation
Services
The Light Sport Aviation Branch (AFS-610) sdays it's sent the
first two Light Sport Aircraft Inspection Airplane course
acceptance letters this week. They went to Charles Becker,
Director, EAA SportAir Workshops and Brian and Carol Carpenter,
Rainbow Aviation Services.
NASA Spacecraft Measures Unusual Arctic Ozone Conditions
Despite near-record levels of chemical ozone destruction in the
Arctic this winter,
observations from NASA's Aura spacecraft showed that other
atmospheric processes
restored ozone amounts to near average and stopped high levels of
harmful ultraviolet
radiation from reaching Earth's surface.
EAA Airventure's Announces Big-Time After-Hours Programs
EAA AirVenture 2005 will host an impressive lineup of evening
programs at Theater in the Woods as some of aviation's leading
personalities and newsmakers will participate at the event July
25th-31st.
In a ceremony held at Sikorsky Aircraft this week, the Fisheries
and Maritime Affairs Department of Xunta de Galicia in Spain
celebrated their purchase of two S-76C+ helicopters. Delivery of
both aircraft is scheduled for later this month.
Residents of the West Side in Manchester, NH, have an answer to
one of their most pressing questions: Why was a military aircraft
roaring low over their homes Tuesday and is there anything to be
worried about?
"It's now clear NASA had not done
its homework on vetting space shuttle
alternatives."

interview with the Wichita Eagle's Washington Bureau. He was one of
several lawmakers requesting the GAO report that shows the shuttles
may not be able to complete their missions before retirement. So
many of the missions are aimed at keep the International Space
Station stocked and manned that NASA is now considering 26 options
for an unmanned cargo-only module.
