Classic Aero-TV: Truly Inspired Attitudes--Flying Aspen’s Revolutionary AOA

From 2015 (YouTube Version): In Flying, One’s ‘Attitude’ is More Important Than Just About Any Other Concept

It’s all about angle of attack (AOA), and ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, took the opportunity at Sun ‘n Fun 2015 to check in with James Buck, the director of flight operations for Aspen Avionics.

Jim starts the interview by asking how Aspen came up with an angle of attack system that appears to have no external appendages or measuring systems on the outside of the airframe.

Buck describes how they do it and finishes by saying, “Its rocket science.” You’ll have to watch the video to get the details. In this interview, Jim actually goes up for a demonstration flight, and you follow along during the flight as Buck explains how it works. In the video you’ll see how the system is calibrated in flight.

Another important aspect of flying with an AOA indicator is understanding how to use it. Jim asked these questions and Buck responds by explaining things we all need to know, regardless of who produces the system. This video not only demonstrates the product, it also talks about the use of the product and the protection it can provide a pilot if the pilot is properly trained.
