Fond Memories of An Oshkosh Past... The Soul Of Oshkosh 2009

From Oshkosh 2009 -- A Morning Walk To Soak In AirVenture's Magic

By Robbie Culver The grass in the Red lot is still soaked, sun streaming across the North 40 reflecting on row upon endless row of wings. A beautiful sight as I begin the slow, easy trek across the AirVenture grounds to Aero-News headquarters by the control tower. The gate guard by the road to the warbirds area greets me with a raised mug of coffee, and we banter back and forth as I amble by, in no particular hurry to get to anyplace in particular for any reason at all. It's Oshkosh, and I am soaking it all in and putting it away for that night in January when it is 20 below zero and I am convinced life as we know it ceases to exist. That night, I will think of Oshkosh.

Classic Aero-TV: Pat Harwell -- Balloon Pilot Extraordinaire

From 2010: As Amazing As The ABQ Balloon Fiesta Is... The Pilots Are Even More So!

In a few recent Aero-TV programs, we've had the great good fortune to relate some of the amazing sights, sounds and sensations we encountered at the 2010 ABQ Balloon Fiesta... and the word 'amazing' barely does this event justice. Really... it's THAT great an event. But... one particular element stands out as the key ingredient in what makes ABQ a world-renowned event... the people... especially the balloon pilots that flock to this annual gathering of all things that float, fly and levitate amongst the

EPA Proposes First Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards for Aircraft

Proposal Supports Domestic Aircraft Manufacturing, Commonsense Regulation To Increase Global Competitiveness

Expected (and feared) for a while the EPA has proposed emissions standards for airplanes used in commercial aviation and large business jets. This action will (allegedly) align U.S. standards with the international carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), making domestically manufactured aircraft competitive in the global marketplace. This proposal also sets a precedent with the Trump Administration being the first to propose regulating greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft.

NTSB Prelim: Piper PA22

Pilot Heard And Felt A "Pop" That Appeared To Emanate From Somewhere In The Airplane

On July 4, 2020, about 1523 Alaska daylight time, a Piper PA-22 airplane, N3604A, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Soldotna, Alaska. The private pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported that once established in a cruise, level flight configuration, around 1,300 ft mean sea level (msl), he heard and felt a "pop" that appeared to emanate from somewhere in the airplane. He said that the airplane then began a shallow, uncommanded descent, and the elevator began to "flutter." The pilot noted that the elevator was not "stuck", but he was unable

ANN's Daily Aero-Linx (07.24.20)

Aero Linx: British Microlight Aircraft Association The BMAA is a members' organisation that exists only to benefit the members. Over the years the BMAA has influenced the legislation that governs microlight flying in the UK, always looking to guide its development to be the most beneficial for the members. The BMAA also provides an information source for microlight pilots and organises or supports flying events to encourage skills development and a social side to the sport. When microlight flying first started in the late 1970s aviation legislation was inappropriate for very lightweight simple aircraft. The BMAA formed partly to represent the new breed of pilots and protect them from growing reg

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (07.24.20)

"A few more cars roll by, headed for the same area of frantic activity I am - press headquarters and the insanity adjacent to it. Good thing I stopped for coffee. One last moment of calm collected peace in the morning air, then the day begins. It's Oshkosh!" Source: From a 2009 story by ANN's Rob Culver, narrating a stream of consciousness-style remembrance of the start of a day at Oshkosh 2009... a dose of which we thought we might all enjoy for a little while.
