Airline Employment Up Slighly In November

BTS Reports 12th Consecutive Increase In Airline FTEs

U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.6 percent more workers in November 2011 than they did in November 2010, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. This is the 12th consecutive increase in full-time equivalent employee (FTE) levels for the scheduled passenger carriers from the same month of the previous year.

Boeing released 2011 Q4 financials Wednesday, and the news was mixed. Despite a long, deep recession, the company's order backlog allowed fourth-quarter net income to rise to $1.4 billion, or $1.84 per share, on revenue of $19.6 billion. But the company also warned that pensions costs higher than anticipated by analysts will create a headwind for 2012.

Helicopter Substantially Damaged, But No One Was Injured

Cold weather flight testing on a Polish-registered PZL Swidnik SW-4 helicopter resulted in an accident but fortunately no injuries. The testing proceeded to plan, but developed problems with the controls after the hydraulic system was shut off. The pilot was not able to overcome the control problems, and the helicopter impacted the ground.

Twenty seven teams of high school students from across the United States competed in the Zero Robotics SPHERES Challenge which took place at MIT in Cambridge, MA and aboard the International Space Station (ISS) this week. "Team Rocket" from River Hill High School, Maryland, "Storming Robots" from Storming Robots LLC, of New Jersey and "SPHEREZ of Influence" from Rockledge High School, Florida posted the best cumulative score out of 9 multi team 'alliances' seeing their code tested in space by real astronauts.

Dassault Falcon's newest Satellite Service Station recently opened, one month ahead of schedule, at West Palm Beach Airport (KPBI) in Florida.
