Airborne 10.22.21: Jetson ONE, Nonagenarian Skydives, Drones v Lava

Also: NASA Adjusts Crew-3 Sked, Southwest Relents, ACR Electronics, Blue Sky Now Shipping

Swedish company Jetson has officially launched their ONE, a commercially available, personal electric aircraft with VTOL capabilities.

The cockpit is flanked by four twin rotors, and the folding, ultralight vehicle appears ready for sale in its recently released promotional video. The ONE appears suited for the recreational crowd, with space for a single pilot and… well, there’s probably somewhere to wedge a granola bar somewhere in that tubing. Piloting is accomplished by a fighter like HOTAS configuration, with the right hand controlling three axes of flight, and power on the left. Now, for his 90th birthday, he will jump again. For that 2011 attempt, Pat had the support of 50 riggers, cameramen, a pilot, and medical personnel on standby. A constant stream of parachute packing and aircraft prep took place over the course of 6 ½ hours, until he made his 81st jump with a celebratory American flag. The ongoing volcanic activity of Cumbre Vieja, on the Spanish Isle of La Palma, has been a subject of internet interest since it began. Early evacuations successfully removed residents from danger, but not all the island’s inhabitants have escaped, however, as viewers remotely touring the situation noticed four scrawny, haggard dogs trapped behind a house. Stuck behind the exclusion zone, with local airspace closed near the volcano, the dogs seemed doomed to starvation or death by lava flow. Local UAV companies Tecnofly and TicomSolutions stepped up to the plate and began airlifting food and water... All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
