If you are looking for the bells and whistles of modern avionics you missed an opportunity if you were not at EAA AirVenture 2014. Well, ANN was there and in this video, ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell takes a look at the newly released Avidyne IFD540 GPS/NAV/COM system.
Jim talks with Tom Harper, the Director of Marketing for Avidyne. Harper said the IFD540 has been under development for about 3 years. Some of this time was spent going through the bureaucratic morass to obtain certification, but Harper also said that developing a system like the IFD540 is a challenge and they wanted to get it right.
The video demonstrates what Avidyne calls “hybrid touch.” This is a combination of touchscreen capabilities and hard buttons. Depending on the in-flight situation, functions can be controlled either way. This is particularly helpful when turbulence makes using a touchscreen difficult. Campbell digs into more details about the new system and how it will affect product development in the future. The video gives you a good operational look at Avidyne’s IFD540 and an informative discussion on what the future holds.
