FAA Investigator In Right Place At Right Time

Gives First Aid To Auto Accident Victim

FAA inspector Thomas Kozura thought Tuesday would be just another routine day, but he was quickly proven wrong.

First on Kozura's agenda was investigating an incident involving a twin-engine Beechcraft that clipped a 46,000-volt powerline 44 feet off Wilson Lake that knocked out power to approximately 1,000 residents of Antrim County, MI.

The pilot, Kevin Johnston managed to land his aircraft at East Jordan City Airport, according to the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

Kozura interviewed the pilot and inspected the plane. Later that afternoon, he left the airport and headed east on M-32 when he happened upon an accident scene involving a pickup truck and two bicyclists, said Antrim County Undersheriff Dan Bean.

Paramedics had not yet arrived, so Kozura grabbed a first aid kit he had in his vehicle. He cleared the airway of Brandon Wade Inglehart of Petoskey who was unconscious and applied first aid to William James Aten of Boyne Falls.

"He really did some work on (Inglehart) to save his life," Bean said. "What a coincidence that this guy happened to be on that road."

Inglehart was listed in critical condition after being airlifted to Munson Medical Center. Aten was in stable condition at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey Wednesday, sheriff's officials said.

Kozura works out of the FAA's Flight Standards District Office in Grand Rapids.
