Two Ground Collisions Bend Planes... And Egos
ANN has learned of two separate incidents of planes colliding on
runways Wednesday.
The first incident involved a Smith 601P Aerostar (file photo of
type, above) that was substantially damaged when a Piper PA-46
Malibu (center) collided with the piston twin at a runway
intersection at Chautauqua County Airport in Dunkirk, NY.
Fortunately, no one suffered injuries to anything but their pride
in that mishap -- although both aircraft were substantially
damaged.
Nor was anyone hurt when two Cessna 172s (file photo of type at
bottom) got a little too close for comfort at Daytona Beach
International in Florida. Pilots in both Skyhawks were on training
flights (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is located at the
field, and one of the aircraft involved carried an Echo-Romeo tail
number) when the wingtips of the two aircraft made contact at
another runway intersection while one was taking off.
According to the METARs given with each report, conditions were
clear at the times both mishaps occurred.
Runway collisions can happen at any time a pilot's attention on
the ground is not where it needed to be at a particular moment
(having said that, we should point out the exact circumstances
surrounding either of these incidents aren't known yet). We're all
guilty of that at least a few times in our flying careers... but
these incidents serve as a reminder to be careful out there, on the
tarmac as well as in the air.
