German Chancellor's Helicopter Suffers Mechanical Problems

Chancellor Merkel Had Just Been Delivered To An Event When Problem occurred

A helicopter which had just delivered German Chancellor Angela Merkel to a campaign event near the German/Swiss border last Wednesday suffered an engine problem and fell 3,300 feet before the crew could re-start its engines.

The Super Puma 332 had been flying at an altitude of 5,250 feet when both the aircraft's engines shut down. London's The Mail online reports that the aircraft fell for nearly two minutes before a re-start was accomplished. The loss of altitude was finally arrested at about 1,950 feet.

The crew executed a successful autorotation to slow the aircraft's descent while they worked to re-start the engines. Officials told the German newspaper The Bild am Sonntag that sabotage had been ruled out.

The aircraft has only been in service with the German government since December of last year.
