CA Midair Collision Claims Three

Plane Crashes Into House, No Injuries On Ground

Three people died Wednesday afternoon when a Cessna 182 and a Cessna 172RG collided over a residential neighborhood near Gillespie Field, between El Cajon and La Mesa, CA.

No one on the ground was injured by the falling wreckage, although the burning wreckage of one of the aircraft landed on the roof of an unoccupied house, briefly starting a fire in the attic. The other aircraft fell onto a park less than half a mile away.

The collision occurred at approximately 4:45 pm. Witnesses told the Los Angeles Times of hearing an explosions, and seeing a fireball in the sky.

Skies were clear at the time of the accident, with light winds. The aircraft were at approximately 2,300 ft. AGL when the collision occurred.

FAA reports show there were two onboard the 172RG, which owned by San Diego, CA-based Scandinavian Aviation Academy. One person was onboard the C182 (file photo of type, below).

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims. The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
