Boeing Concedes Production Rate to Ensure Quality 

Trouble in the form of supply-chain delays has beset Boeing’s beleaguered, 737 MAX program. A source familiar with Boeing production schedules states the 737 MAX assembly line at the company’s Renton, WA plant sat idle for a period of roughly ten-days in May as airplanes were held in position pending delivery of parts missing because of supply chain issues. According to the source, work on production line aircraft did not stop entirely, but continued to the extent possible with extant parts.

Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Fighter Enters Critical Phase

The United States Air Force’s secretive and highly classified Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter program has entered its crucial, engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase, states USAF Secretary Frank Kendall. In a discussion at the Heritage Foundation, Kendall said the Air Force began early experimental prototyping on NGAD in 2015. This early testing was designed to assess and reduce program risks while developing key technologies essential to the inchoate aircraft.

The captain of an ITA A-330 has been fired by the Italian state-carrier for allegedly falling asleep at the controls of his aircraft during a flight from New York to Rome. Marseille ATC was unable to contact the Airbus, designated flight AZ609, for an unknown period of time, however, the pilots on board the ITA jet eventually did report before continuing on to Rome without incident. The captain subsequently stated that the radio connection was interrupted due to a technical issue, but ITA refuted the claim after an examination of the aircraft. Flight data showed that flight AZ609 did not lose altitude or deviate from course during the NORDO interval.

Balloon/Train Collision Under Investigation

Wisconsin Hot Air Balloon Accident Victims Released From Hospital

Three people were injured when a hot air balloon collided with a train in Wisconsin. The individuals—who were erroneously reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries—were treated and released from a Milwaukee hospital. Early reports from on-scene witnesses indicated the hot air balloon appeared to be in distress before colliding with a northbound train.

Maui Fire Department Enhances Operations With New Helicopter

Aloha to New Eurocopter BK117-850G2  Hawaii’s Maui Fire Department (MFD) has announced the imminent fielding of a new helicopter that will supplement the organization’s firefighting, rescue, and personnel transport operations. The Eurocopter BK117-850G2–dubbed Iolani, or “royal hawk” in Hawaiian—was blessed in a May ceremony hosted by Fire Chief Bradford Ventura. Among those in attendance were Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino, County Council member Mike Molina, and representatives of several local and state agencies.   The blessing itself was conducted by MFD Assistant Chief of Operations Hanale Lindo.

CAE announced at the recent European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE2022) that it has extended its partnership with Global Jet, the Geneva based aviation services provider. NTSB Prelim: Cessna 140

Airplane Rolled To The Right, And Completed A 3/4 Turn Right Spin And Impacted Terrain

On May 20, 2022, at 1842 central standard time, a Cessna 140 airplane, N76075, was destroyed when it impacted terrain near the Wayne Municipal Airport (LCG), Wayne, Nebraska. The private pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated by the pilot under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. According to a representative with STOL Drag Events LLC., who was a participant organization in the 2022 Wayne County Mayday STOL Drag Races, the day before the accident the event began with short takeoff and landing drag racing (STOL Drag) training conducted on a course next to runway 5-23.
