This week should be chock full of unmanned aviation goodness. AUVSI's annual conference and trade show, AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2021, starts off as an expanded hybrid event series. After the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a virtual staging of XPONENTIAL 2020 last October, the Association decided on a full virtual program this spring followed by an in-person event late in the summer. The series will support its mission to convene the unmanned and automated systems community to accelerate innovation and market adoption of the related technologies. Women in Aviation International (WAI) members and friends will honor the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) by visiting their graves and leaving an appropriate decoration in the form of flowers or other remembrances. In its fourth year, the #HonorTheWASP program was originally envisioned to take place over the Memorial Day weekend each year. In an effort to allow participants to observe best social-distancing practices, WAI encourages participants to visit gravesites over the entire month of May as opposed to just on Monday, May 31st, Memorial Day.

Fire Scout UAV Lost After Impacting USS Charleston

The MQ-8B Fell Into The Sea And Was Not Recovered

An unmanned helicopter crashed into the side of USS Charleston (LCS 18) after taking off from the ship around 3:40 p.m., April 26. Some 30 airframes are known to be in service. No one was injured, and the Littoral Combat Ship continued to safely operate after the incident involving the MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical take-off and landing tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (VTUAV).

USCG Mobilizes Forward Operating Location Cordova, Alaska

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak crews opened up a seasonal aviation support facility Saturday in Cordova, Alaska in advance of summer fisheries. Air Station Kodiak aircrews transferred an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and equipment to Cordova to reduce the response time to the Gulf of Alaska in anticipation of historically increased maritime activity in that region during the summer.

A true American Hero has gone west. Apollo 11's Mike Collins has passed away. Michael Collins was born Oct. 31, 1930 in Rome, Italy. He graduated from West Point in 1952. NTSB Prelim: Jabiru USA Sport Aircraft

Airplane Was In Cruise Flight When The Engine Began To Experience “Hiccups”

On March 30, 2021, about 1105 eastern daylight time, a Jabiru USA Sport Aircraft J250-SP, N236X, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Fort Pierce, Florida. The pilot was seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, the airplane was in cruise flight when the engine began to experience “hiccups.” He switched fuel tanks and turned on the electric fuel pump, but engine issues continued. The pilot elected to perform a precautionary landing to a field road.
