The FAA has released final rules for UAVs. The new rules will require Remote ID of drones and allow operators of small drones to fly over people and at night under certain conditions. These rules come at a time when drones represent the fastest-growing segment in the entire transportation sector – with currently over 1.7 million drone registrations and 203,000 FAA-certificated remote pilots. The Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) has entered into an agreement with the Mid America Flight Museum in Mount Pleasant, Texas (MAFM) whereby LSFM has agreed to sell its Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Thunderbird, to MAFM. Mid America has agreed to display Thunderbird at Lone Star’s facility at Houston’s Ellington Airport for several months each year through 2024. Mid America has also agreed to make other aircraft from its collection available for display at LSFM during the same time frame.

AMA: Educational UAS Protections Become Law

A Provision Prohibiting Federal Agencies From Using Foreign-Made UAS and UAS Equipment Was Removed

AMA has updated the status of a number of their ongoing initiatives... with emphasis, this time, on Educational UAS programs. The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2021 has become law. Although the bill originally passed both the House of Representatives and the Senate in early December, President Trump vetoed the bill on December 23, 2020. This resulted in a rare New Year’s Day vote by the Senate of 81-13 to override the presidential veto, following a vote of 322-87 by the House of Representatives on December 28. This is the first veto override by Congress in Trump’s presidency.

ISS 2021 Brings Space Biology, Awaits US Cargo Ship Departures

The seven-member Expedition 64 crew relaxed on New Year’s Day and went into the first weekend of 2021 researching space biology. The International Space Station residents are also packing a pair of U.S. resupply ships for departure this week and next. Three astronauts spent Saturday and Sunday studying how microgravity affects vision and bone tissue in rodents. Michael Hopkins and Victor Glover of NASA spent the weekend observing several dozen mice to help scientists prevent vision and bone conditions that astronauts experience while living in space. JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi assisted the duo during the two life science experiments.

Teledyne Technologies and FLIR Systems have entered into a definitive agreement under which Teledyne will acquire FLIR in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $8.0 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, FLIR stockholders will receive $28.00 per share in cash and 0.0718 shares of Teledyne common stock for each FLIR share, which implies a total purchase price of $56.00 per FLIR share based on Teledyne’s 5-day volume weighted average price as of December 31, 2020. On December 19, 2020, about 1216 eastern standard time, a piper PA-46-310 airplane; N662TC, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Naples, Florida. The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The flight originated at Sarasota / Bradenton international Airport (SRQ), Sarasota, Florida destined for Key West International Airport (EYW), Key West, Florida.
