The rumors have been ghosting around for a few weeks, but the airplane that would not die appears to have resurrected itself again... for the umpteenth time. For Mooney owners and fans, this is good news, but the details of this new development promises some interesting Mooney Watching for the next few years. The wraps came off the whole works late yesterday when a notice was posted to the Mooney website, addressed to, "...The Mooney Community" and authored by Mooney CEO Jonny Pollack.

Based on the comments and press releases of a few business jet charter providers, one could be led to believe that the industry is on fire as well-heeled travelers avoid the airlines. While there may be some outlier examples, the data generally does not support these claims, and worse, the unsubstantiated exuberance may be setting the industry up for exclusion from any future government aid programs. To be sure, business aviation traffic has recovered much faster than the airlines. Whereas the number of airline flights are still down 46% from year-ago levels, in North America business jet trips are now within 20% of this time last summer and about triple what they were in April of this year.<

Rocket Lab Granted FAA Launch Operator License

Missions Will Launch From Wallops Island Complex 2

Rocket Lab has been granted a five-year Launch Operator License by the FAA for Electron missions from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 2. The Launch Operator License allows for multiple launches of the Electron launch vehicle from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 2, eliminating the need to obtain individual, launch-specific licenses for every mission and helping to streamline the path to orbit and enable responsive space access from U.S. soil. Located at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport within the NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia, Launch Complex 2 has been designed to provide responsive launch capability to support for U.S. government missions.

Verne Jobst To Be Inducted Into The IAC Hall Of Fame

Also Headed Up The Airshow Operation At EAA AirVenture For 33 Years

Our friend, Verne Jobst, is getting another well-deserved honor, having been selected by the IAC Hall of Fame committee and the Board of Directors to be inducted into the International Aerobatics Hall of Fame. The official ceremonies normally take place in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. An announcement will be made for a date in 2021. In 1970, Verne was one of the earliest members of the IAC having joined in the first few weeks of the club’s formation. He went on to make a significant impact on the development of the IAC in its formative years.

HSM-70, Gerald R. Ford Land Four MH-60R Sea Hawk Helicopters On Ford’s Flight Deck While Moored

Sailors assigned to USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70 worked together to land four MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters on Ford’s flight deck while the ship was moored at Naval Station Norfolk, Aug. 30. HSM-70, stationed in Jacksonville, Florida executed the rare, pier-side fly-on to quickly enable follow-on operations during Independent Steaming event (ISE) 12, while ensuring the health of the crew during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Coast Guard Rescues Pilot In St. John The Baptist Parish

USCG MH-65 To The Rescue!

The Coast Guard rescued a pilot of a downed aircraft last week in St. John the Baptist Parish. Rescued was Calvin King, who was transported that evening to University Medical Center in New Orleans with a reportedly broken arm and no other reported injuries. The FAA ASIAS site says that the aircraft involved was N567N, a Piper PA38 Tomahawk and that the, "Aircraft lost engine power and crashed in a marsh, Reserve, La." Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report around 9 p.m. from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office that a single engine plane had crashed in a swampy area north of Port of South Louisiana Executive Regional Airport, with one person aboard.

Drones Put To Use In ERAU Marine Mammal Rescue Program

Embry-Riddle, Verizon Partner On Novel Marine Conservation Program 

In an effort to safely and humanely rescue marine mammals, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has partnered with marine biologists and a Verizon drone-management platform to monitor animals in distress using unmanned aircraft systems. A video produced by Verizon features Gennifer Brookshire, a marine biologist and FAA-certified drone operator, who explains that attempting to reach marine mammals in need can sometimes disturb them, whether rescuers approach from the shore or by boat. Seals in the video are shown entangled in fishing line, while others in need of medical treatment are carried off the beach in stretchers.

NTSB Prelim: Siebel Auriga

While Climbing Through 3,000 Ft, About 3-5 Miles North Of 1C8, The Engine "Sputtered And Quit."

On August 14, 2020, about 1144 central daylight time, an experimental Siebel Auriga airplane, N505JS, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Rockford, Illinois. The pilot was not injured. The driver of an automobile sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot report that he departed runway 18 at Cottonwood Airport (1C8), Rockford, Illinois, and continued north of the airport where he intended to monitor engine oil temperatures after making changes to the engine cowling to increase cooling. Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2020-18-51 is sent to owners and operators of various aircraft with Sandia attitude indicator (attitude indicator) part number (P/N) 306171-10 or 306171-20 installed. These attitude indicators may be marked as BendixKing Model KI-300 or Sandia Model SAI-340A. This emergency AD was prompted by a report of three failed attitude indicator P/N 306171-10 units. Following the initial report, investigation has revealed a total of 54 failed attitude indicator P/N 306171-10 units. AD 2020-18-07 Require Repetitive Inspections Of The Fuselage Skin For Chafing Damage

The FAA is superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2016-18-09, which applied to certain Airbus SAS Model A318, A319, and A320 series airplanes. AD 2016-18-09 required repetitive detailed inspections for damage on the fuselage skin at certain frames, and applicable related investigative and corrective actions. This AD continues to require repetitive inspections of the fuselage skin for chafing damage at certain frames using a new inspection process, and corrective actions if necessary; as specified in a European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) AD, which is incorporated by reference.
