Crew Escapes After B-1B Bomber Catches Fire In Qatar

Aircraft Was Taxiing After Landing

There are few details available on why a B-1B Lancer bomber caught fire as it taxied after landing at an airbase in Southwest Asia Friday, though we do know the crew was able to evacuate the plane safely.

According to US Air Force officials, the Lancer had just landed at al Udeid Air Base at 2110 local time Friday, when it was involved in "a ground incident" and caught fire.

"The crew evacuated the aircraft and is safe," the USAF said. "The fire was contained."

Reports indicate the aircraft was destroyed in the blaze. Qatar-based al Jazeera initially reported the aircraft was a B-52 Stratofortress.

An investigation has been launched.
