Gone West: Col. Joseph Rogers

Still Holds Aviation Speed Record

A man described as a military aviation legend died Saturday of congestive heart failure. Col. Joseph Rogers (USAF, Ret.) died at his California home. He was 81.

Rogers joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 when he was just 17. In 1950, he was listed by Time Magazine as one of its men of the year.

Rogers flew more than 270 combat missions during WWII, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. But he was best remembered for setting the world speed record for single-engine jet aircraft. He set that record in 1960, flying an F-106 at 1,525 mph.

The record still holds.

After 29 years in the military, Rogers retired and went to work for Northrop, selling aircraft in Asia.

Col. Joseph Rogers has gone west, where there are no conflicts, only the pure joy of fast flight. Happy landings, Colonel.
