Reports: Pilot Safe After Ejecting From F-15 Over Indiana

Plane Impacts Near Vincennes

The pilot of an F-15 fighter that went down Wednesday morning near the city of Vincennes, IN was able to eject safely.

The Associated Press reports the aircraft (type shown above) was flying with the 131st Fighter Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard. Knox County Sheriff officer Shawn Brown told reporters the jet impacted near the city's south side.

"It's an F-15," Brown said. "They're out there right now checking the scene."

The aircraft was one of a four conducting training maneuvers near the southwestern Indiana city.

One witness told Evansville television station WFIE he saw two jets 'dogfighting' just before the accident.

"I saw one of them make a loop and start to lose altitude," said Willie Mayberry. "Then all of a sudden I saw the pilot eject, the seat separated from him and I saw the parachute open. Then all of the sudden, the jet hit the ground. I saw a billow of black smoke and then a big old ball of fire."

None of the other planes in formation were involved in the accident.
