Winter Weather Good For 'White Christmas,' Bad For Travelers

Airlines Reporting Delays Across The Globe

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 12.22.06 08:32 EST: This week's blizzard that hammered the western US has moved off to the east, but its effects are still being felt across the country. Weather stations along the storm's path are reporting an average of two feet of snow.

ANN reported yesterday on the massive flight cancellations at Denver International and other regional airports. Denver International had planned to dig itself out and open late yesterday evening, but continuing snowfall throughout the night dashed those optimistic hopes. Airport managers are now hoping to begin limited operations sometime this afternoon.

Flight cancellations in western airports are affecting schedules country-wide with airports in Chicago and New York City reporting two and half hour delays and at least 45 minutes at Atlanta's Hartsfield. Airport managers warn the delays will only worsen today as the full effects of yesterdays flight cancellations and continuing bad weather in the eastern US begin to be felt.

Those of you planning to get yourselves from here to there in the Eastern US using your personal aircraft would be wise to carefully check the weather as yesterday's blizzard has moved off to the east of the Mississippi bringing rain, clouds and wind all the way from the gulf coast to Canada.

Although we are an aviation news organization we feel it important to also point out travel on the roads is just as treacherous today as travel by air -- especially in the west where many roads are still buried.

And it's not just in the US where Mother Nature is having a little Holiday fun. Travelers at London' Heathrow are into their fourth straight day of flight cancellations as thick fog blankets the city of London.

Airlines there are cancelling most domestic short-haul flights to the Continent and delaying many long-haul overseas flights. British Airways announced 170 flight cancellations for today alone.

Domestic UK flights are first on the cancellation list because it's not just Heathrow in the soup, Gatwick, Norwich, Southampton and Coventry are all predicting continuing delays and cancellations for weather.

All in all, if you're travelling this Holiday Season you're not a happy camper (literally in some cases). But if you're sitting at home in front of a fire roasting chestnuts, you can be sure the weather outside is most definitely frightful!
