Plane Down: Congo

Ten Passengers Lost -- But There's One Survivor

A UN-chartered Antonov AN-26 went down in the Congo Thursday, killing ten of the eleven people on board, according to UN sources.

The aircraft, which had just taken off from the town of Isiro in central Congo, carried five crew members and six passengers. That word from Mohammad Hashi, a UN relief agency official based in the Congo.

There was no immediate indication as to what brought the Antonov down.

"According to the information we have received, one passenger survived but 10 others who were aboard are dead," Hashi said by telephone from Kisangani.

The Congo is a huge, undeveloped country the size of Western Europe. There are few passable roads, leaving the country's fleet of ill-maintained aircraft as one of the main ways to get from point to point, according to Hashi.

The incident aircraft was owned by Kisangani Airlift, a Congolese-based company which had leased the AN-26 to a company called Euroworld, according to local radio reports.
