Another Bungle In The Jungle

AN-26 Down In Democratic Republic Of Congo

Yet another Soviet-era civil aircraft went down in the Democratic Republic of Congo Tuesday, killing eleven people, according to the UN. The aircraft was reportedly on approach to the airport in Isiro when it crashed in poor visibility about a mile from the runway threshold.

It was at least the fifth deadly aviation mishap involving Soviet-era aircraft Central Africa had seen this year, many of them involving aircraft registered in or passengers flying from the Democratic Republic of Congo. A May 4th mishap involving an Antonov AN-26 -- the same type of aircraft that crashed on Tuesday -- also occurred near Isiro.
