O'Hare Accord Extended

To Be Reviewed Every Six Months

The voluntary agreement between the FAA and airlines serving Chicago's O'Hare International Airport was extended Tuesday through April 2008. The federal agency said it will review the agreement every six months to see if O'Hare can accomodate more flight operations than called for under the accord.

As ANN reported last year, the agreement between the FAA and airlines limited the number of arrivals at the nation's busiest airport to 88 an hour. The idea was to cut delays by about 20-percent. Before the agreement, there were on average about 110 arrivals an hour at O'Hare.

"Flight reductions at O'Hare have worked to cut delays but they are not our preferred approach," Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said in statement to ANN. "We need to develop additional capacity so the market can be allowed to grow without the burden of government interference or the fear of airport gridlock."

The FAA said continuing the voluntary limits on flight arrivals at O'Hare would save cash-strapped airlines about $700 million over the next three years and would reduce delays by as much as 42-percent.
