Officials: Engine Failed On Take-Off From Field Near
Two people are dead after a 1994 Aviat crashed on take-off from
an unimproved field near Luling (TX) Saturday. Luling is about 45
miles south of Austin.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said 48-year old Errol
Winson of League City had landed in the field to pick up his
friend, 45-year old Gene Matheaus Jr., a firefighter from Lake
"On takeoff from the field, for whatever reason, the engine
failed causing the aircraft to nosedive into the field," said DPS
spokesman Tom Vinger.
The FAA and NTSB are investigating.
