ATR And Safran Hard Landing Diagnostics With RTS
ATR and Safran Landing Systems have announced the arrival of the ‘Smart Lander’ a landing-gear diagnostics system that gathers and analyses data to optimize repair activities and potentially accelerate the aircrafts’ return to service.
To clarify, the ‘Smart Lander’, unlike ‘AutoLand’, does not interact in any way with the navigation, flight, or landing of the aircraft. It is simply a diagnostic service, perhaps a more appropriate name would be ‘Hard Landing Diagnostics and Return to Service Analysis’, but perhaps not as flashy or eye-catching as Smart Land. Regardless, this gizmo uses machine learning on data collected by Safran and makes recommendations on maintenance actions to take, depending on the hardness of the landing, and potentially reduces repair time, from what is typically a week-long process to about one hour. According to David Brigante, ATR Senior Vice-President Customer Support and Services, their “former process could take up to 10 to 20 working days” and now, can “massively” reduce their service response times, while improving customer service levels and costs.
ATR, headquartered in Toulouse, France was founded in 1981 and manufactures turbo-prop airplanes for a wide range of uses. They have enjoyed a partnership with Airbus and Leonardo, both of which also manufacture commercial and airplanes and helicopters, aerial firefighters, and search-and-rescue (SAR) systems, and multi-mission configurable transporters. The group provides additional products and services including personnel training, fleet management, cyber, and communication systems.
