One of the pivotal
aspects of the long-awaited Light Sport Aircraft program was a
means whereby the industry could come together and agree on
compliance standards in lieu of (potentially) more restrictive and
stifling FAA-mandated and administered certification programs.
The advantages of this program (which took years to put
together) were obvious... it tended to be less restrictive and
costly to implement, it would not stifle innovation and
improvement, and it was agreed to by the very people who would have
to live up to the standards (once the FAA agreed that they met the
letter of the law in terms of what they covered).
Rotax has become the first sport aircraft engine manufacturer to
declare that they meet a LSA powerplant standard, via the document
below that states which engines (including the serial numbers that
actually apply) meet the ASTM standards vetted by the industry,
ASTM and the FAA. It is obvious that Rotax has (early on)
recognized the importance of this industry standard, and have
become the first such enterprise to put together all the material
necessary to comply with the requirements listed.
