FAA Issues Advisory For Korean Peninsula

GPS Signals Unreliable In Incheon Flight Information Region

The FAA has issued a Notice to Airmen to all U.S. operators regarding flying in the Korean Peninsula Incheon (RKRR) Flight Information Region (FIR). The FAA cautions operators to be prepared to use non-GPS navigation aids and to review all current NOTAMs. The advisory comes after reports of GPS reliability concerns – including interference and disruption – in the region.

“We urge Member Companies that operate in this region to exercise caution and plan to use backup navigation methods in the event of GPS reliability issues,” said Doug Carr, NBAA’s vice president of regulatory and international affairs. “Operators should also be aware of other operational challenges in the region, including airspace claim disputes between Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China.”

The FAA requests pilots who experience GPS navigation system interference and disruption to report the occurrence to the FAA at (202) 267-3333 or (844) 412-1794.

The FAA says the justification for the NOTAM will be reviewed by October 31 of next year.
