New Zealand Police Use Drone To Bust Pot Farm

Used Borrowed Aircraft To Catch Harvesters

New Zealand police used a borrowed drone to uncover a hidden crop of about 100 marijuana plants in the Kaingaroa Forest on the North Island.

NewsHub.co.nz reports that authorities had first been alerted to the activity on April 7, but were unable to locate the field in the sprawling forest using traditional methods after covering some 11 miles of the forest on foot.

Police Sergeant Chris Turnbull told Fairfax Media that they finally located the field using a borrowed UAV. "Without that drone we would not have found it and would have just been wandering around the bush," he said.

Sgt. Turnbull said that it is the first time a drone has been used for such an operation.

Two men were arrested in connection with the pot field. When they were detained, they reeked of marijuana and were carrying machetes, which they said they were using for hunting. That is also a crime, according to the report.
