- Sonex founder and president John Monnett first came to the kit aircraft scene in 1972 with his Sonerai formula VW racer design. Previous to Sonex, John has multiple variants of the Sonerai, the Monerai sailplane, Monex Racer and Moni motorglider designs to his credit, along with the AeroVee line of VW aircraft engine conversions. John is an inductee into the EAA Homebuilders Hall of Fame and has earned the EAA Freedom of Flight Award, the SETP Spirit of Flight Award, the EAA August Raspet Award and many other distinctions. The Monex Racer still holds a world record set in 1982 for speed over a 500km closedcourse.
