Airborne 04.13.18: Sun Flyer 2 Flies!, 300th G650, ValuJet Mech Still Sought

Also: Radiant Tech New IOS APP, NPS Air Tour Exemption List, SpaceX Gulf Of Mexico, 'Learn to Skydive Month'

Bye Aerospace has confirmed that the prototype Sun Flyer 2 aircraft has made its first flight.

The prototype aircraft flight test program, which began in late March, is being conducted at Centennial Airport (KAPA), south of Denver, Colorado, and are now progressing to increased speed, altitude and endurance capabilities. EP Systems provided the energy storage system for the Sun Flyer 2 prototype aircraft being flight tested, including battery modules (packs), battery management unit and power distribution unit. The battery cells are LG Chem “MJ1” lithium-ion battery cells with a 260 Wh/kg energy density. Bye Aerospace will soon announce who its electric motor partner will be for the family of FAA-certified Sun Flyer aircraft. Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently delivered the 300th aircraft in the Gulfstream G650 family. This milestone comes just over five years after the aircraft entered service in December 2012. The G650 is the fastest large-cabin, non-supersonic aircraft to circumnavigate the globe, having flown westbound around the world in a record-setting 41 hours and 7 minutes, claiming 22 city-pair speed records along the way. The FBI is stepping up its search for Mauro Ociel Valenzuela-Reyes in connection with the 1996 ValuJet accident in south Florida that resulted in the fatal injury of all 110 people on board the airplane. The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Valenzuela-Reyes. A wanted poster released by the agency shows what he looked like in 1996, and how he may appear today. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
