Airborne 10.12.18: Soyuz Close Call, ONE Aviation BK, Balloon Fiesta v UAVs

A Russian launch to the ISS, carrying a Russian and American astronaut, was aborted early in the launch phase, but has resulted in the safe landing and recovery of both crewmen.

Few astronauts will argue that a failure early in the launch phase is one of their worst nightmares, and for first time NASA Astronaut Nick Hague, this very short first rocket excursion had to be a stunning disappointment. NASA’s initial statement says, "The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station at 4:40 a.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 11 carrying American astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin. Shortly after launch, there was an anomaly with the booster and the launch ascent was aborted, resulting in a ballistic landing of the spacecraft.” It’s been a long tough road for the Eclipse program and its associated efforts... but at least the fight is still on. ONE Aviation Corporation (along with its subsidiaries Eclipse Aerospace and Kestrel Aircraft), have confirmed that the Company has entered into a consensual restructuring pursuant to the terms of a Restructuring Support Agreement with support from 100% of its voting first lien lenders. As part of this process, the company has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy while concurrently securing financing from its ‘first position’ lender. It’s disheartening to note that while so many of the hobby drone community are working hard to be and stay legal, too many are not. Nearly 500 drones were detected operating in the No Fly Zone around the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Balloon Fiesta hired Phoenix-based Aerial Armor to keep track of any unauthorized aircraft operating in the area around Fiesta Park. Current regs prohibit drone flights within the area of the park, but some 458 drones were noted within the past few days by the monitoring company, and nearly half reportedly crossed into the No Fly Zone. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
