Airborne-Unmanned 07.17.18: Trans-Atlantic UAV!, Journalist Detained, Drone Reg.

Also: Drones Map Canadian City, 3DR Launches Thermal Imaging Solution, MQ-8C Milestone, MQ-9 Reaper Hack, Airventure 2018!

Wednesday at 6:51 p.m. local time a Medium-altitude, Long-endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) produced by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) made history as it landed at the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in Gloucestershire, U.K. and became the first MALE RPA to successfully complete a trans-Atlantic flight.

The GA-ASI-owned MQ-9B SkyGuardian took off from Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA on July 10th at 12:48 p.m. CDT. The flight covered 3,760 nautical mile flight in 24 hours 2 minutes. A journalist attempting to capture images above the Tham Laung cave system during the rescue of the soccer team that had been trapped for nearly two weeks was detained by authorities for flying a drone too close to a helicopter in the area. The incident occurred a week ago Sunday, according to media reports. The drone was being used to give a media team better access to the cave entrance where the team was emerging and being placed into ambulances. The FAA is warning drone owners – especially hobbyists -- about people offering to “help” register their drones with the agency. The FAA Drone Zone is all you need – and it costs only $5.00. There are a number of entities that offer to help drone owners and operators file an application for a registration number. Some attempt to mimic the look of the FAA’s website with similar graphic designs and some even use the FAA logo to allegedly suggest they are somehow “approved” by the agency. They aren’t – and you could be wasting your money. The FAA neither regulates these entities nor will speculate on their legitimacy. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
