Farmer Says Low-Flying Military Jets Scared Chickens To Death

Claims To Have Lost 5,000 Birds After A Low-Altitude Pass

When a flight of two French military jets made a low pass near a chicken farm in Brittany, the owner of the farm claims the noise scared about 5,000 of his birds literally to death.

Etienne Le Mehaute owns the farm, which has a stock of about 68,000 chickens. He told Quest-France that he is out as much as 15,000 euros, and so he is suing the French defense ministry, according the the English language newspaper The Connexion.

The French military has opened an investigation, and confirms there was a flight of two jets in the area on the day in question, but that they maintained a proper altitude for low-level operations during the flight. Mr. Mehaute says he did not actually see the jets, but several field hands as well as neighbors watched them pass. The military said if a link between the jet noise and the dead chickens is found, they would be prepared to make restitution to the farmer.
