House Aviation Subcommittee, GA Caucus Leaders Oppose User Fee Threat

NBAA Has Prepared A Letter Members Can Send To Representatives In Washington

In the two weeks since President Obama called for a $100 per-flight user fee in his latest federal budget proposal, Congressional opposition to the idea has been building, including from four members of the U.S. House of Representatives who are urging their colleagues to sign a letter of protest to the White House.

Representatives Sam Graves (R-MO) and John Barrow (D-GA), co-chairmen of the General Aviation Caucus; Congressman Tom Petri (R-WI), chairman of the Aviation Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; and Representative Jerry Costello (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee have all signed the letter, and  are asking their colleagues to do likewise.

“During these challenging economic times, the industry should not be saddled with more than $1 billion in new costs each year,” the lawmakers wrote to other members of the House. "This fee would have a devastating impact on commercial and general aviation, as well as the aviation manufacturing industry.”

“User fees are a bad idea, and unfortunately, it's hard to kill a bad idea in Washington,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. "We thank the House leaders for taking action on this critical issue."

NBAA says its members can help in this effort by contacting their representatives in Washington, and alerting them to the industry's concern about the latest user fee threat from the White House. The association's Contact Congress web site has a letter dedicated to telling Congress to oppose the president’s proposed user fees for general aviation.
