DC Area Airports All Shut Down By Snowpocalypse

Air Travel Halts Under Several Feet Of Snow

Air traffic in and out of DCA, IAD, and BWI was suspended on Saturday due to the winter storm sweeping through the mid-Atlantic region.  The terminals did stay open to house travelers stranded by the storm, some on their way to Florida to see a Space Shuttle launch or the Superbowl.

On Friday, passengers scrambled to fill earlier flights as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning: "RECORD SNOWFALL FORECAST IN THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON DC REGION."  NWS reports as of 10pm Sat showed IAD at 32.4" of snow, DCA with 17.8", and BWI with 24.8".

Snow crews worked at BWI, IAD and DCA, but the large amount of snow still falling presents a challenge.  The airports all indicated that they did not know when or if commercial flights would resume on Sunday.

All passengers were advised to contact the individual airlines online or via telephone regarding flights and rebooking before coming to the airport.
