Skydivers Hope Deland Muni Stays Tower-Free

Say Making DED A Towered Field Would Hurt Business

Skydivers flying out of Florida's DeLand Municipal Airport (DED) say airport officials can keep their money, instead of beginning a study this week to determine of the airport is busy enough to sustain a control tower.

The Orlando Sentinel reports officials will examine how many flight operations occur at the airport each day. The FAA requires the cost-benefit analysis before signing off on the city's plans to build a control tower at the field.

Skydivers maintain the airport does just fine as an uncontrolled field. They're afraid making DED a towered airport will cut back the number of flights skydiving centers based on the field could make each day, making it tougher to make a profit.

Deland is considered by many in the skydiving community as one of the top fields in the US. Airport officials say not having a tower poses a safety hazard to everyone, skydivers included.

A public meeting is planned for Thursday to determine the best methods for conducting the study.
