Museum Airplane Damaged During 'Hard Landing'

Pitcairn Built In 1930 Lost Power, Made Off-Runway Landing

A 1930 Pitcairn biplane belonging to the Owls Head (ME) Transportation Museum was slightly damaged when it lost power and made an off-runway landing at Knox County Regional Airport.

BDN Maine reports that the incident occurred as the PA-7S was departing from the airport about 6:30 pm local time. Pilot Tom Rudder, a museum volunteer, said the plane lost power just as the wheels were getting off the ground.

Rudder put the plane down in some grass at the end of the runway, and took out some bushes along the way. Airport manager Jeffrey Northgraves said the nose of the plane also went down into the ground, and there was some cosmetic damage to the landing gear.

Rudder was uninjured in the incident.
