Research Shows Aviation Prepares Millennials For Any Career

Skills Learned In Flight Training Are Valuable In Today's Job Market

Brown Aviation Lease published new research this week detailing how the skills an aviator receives through the experience of flight training have value far beyond the cockpit. The Flying Into Your Perfect Career: Why Millennial Pilots are Positioned for Success infographic and case study show that many of the skills possessed by pilots are the same as those valued by fortune 500 companies, innovative startups, and large freelance platforms like Fiverr and Uber.

“Given the dynamic nature of the job market and rising costs, aviation programs have to articulate the value of pilot training beyond just fulfilling a passion for flight,” states Nick Abate Director of Marketing and Analytics at Brown Aviation Lease.  “The value has always been there, but until recently we haven’t had strong data to support the argument.  With this latest piece of analysis, we hope to arm the industry with real data that proves what millennials learn in the cockpit can be used beyond the confines of aviation.”

In today’s dynamic job market the emphasis has shifted from job specific training to a mastery of core skills and abilities as the best predictors of success. No matter what industry, those who can demonstrate key skills and point to specific experience will have an advantage over the rest. The core life skills identified in Brown’s research are: self-confidence, communication, managing uncertainty, problem solving and adaptability. Skills that any aviator would agree are honed in the left seat of an aircraft.

The crossover between piloting an aircraft and leading a company is evident.  There are many successful businessmen who are also pilots as pointed out in the case study; leaders like Michael Bloomberg (Bloomberg LP), Steve Wozniak (Apple) and Larry Ellison (Oracle).

“The Flying Into The Perfect Career case study is another strong tool our enrollment team will utilize,” states Jesse James, Senior Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management at the University of Dubuque. “This is valuable content that we can take and use in our recruiting efforts when we talk to prospective students and parents about the value of a degree in aviation.”
