AMA Drone Report 07.12.18: Drone Reg. Warning, Taylor v FAA, OSH DroneShow

Also: Drone Advisory Committee, OH Town Drone Regs, Drone Umbrella, AirVenture Schedule Update

The FAA is warning drone owners – especially hobbyists -- about people offering to “help” register their drones with the agency.

The FAA Drone Zone is all you need – and it costs only $5.00. There are a number of entities that offer to help drone owners and operators file an application for a registration number. Some attempt to mimic the look of the FAA’s website with similar graphic designs and some even use the FAA logo to allegedly suggest they are somehow “approved” by the agency. They aren’t – and you could be wasting your money. The D.C. Court of Appeals has denied a petition for review of the FAA's rules concerning the registration of model aircraft under its drone registration rules. Attorney John Taylor had challenged the registration of model aircraft citing FAA Section 336. The section provides that, notwithstanding any other provision of law regarding incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into FAA plans and policies, the FAA, “may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model aircraft” that satisfies five operational criteria. For the first time in North America, a drone light show will be part of an air show when EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 presents up to 100 lighted drones in flight during night air shows on July 25 and 28. Great Lakes Drone Company, based in Watervliet, Michigan, will be flying their drones and is one of just two U.S. companies authorized by the FAA for such displays. EAA’s Dave Chaimson, notes that, “What makes this event especially memorable are the intricate maneuvers that are capable by up to 100 synchronized drones, highlighting the possibilities of safe and responsible drone flying. People come to AirVenture to see aerial excitement not seen anywhere else, and these performances certainly continue that tradition.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
