If things go as planned, the Commemorative Air Force’s B-29, named FIFI, will no longer be by herself as the only airworthy World War Two Boeing Superfortress.
Doc’s Friends, the group managing the restoration of the B-29 known as Doc, have announced that their B29 will make its return to flight Sunday, July 17. The restored Boeing B29 Superfortress will take off from the non-joint-use runway at McConnell Air Force Base, adjacent to where the restoration team has spent the last 16 years restoring the warbird. It looks like third class pilot medical reform may finally be happening as the FAA Authorization Bill that will be debated in Congress over the next few days contains medical certificate reforms that were proposed in the Pilot's Bill of Rights-2 by U.S. Senator James Inhofe. EAA’s Jack Pelton and AOPA’s Mark Baker issued a joint release indicating they are pleased that this major change is on the way. Aviation advocacy associations are generally offering praise to House and Senate leaders for reaching agreement on an FAA funding extension through the end of the next fiscal year. However, they also universally
chide Congress for not being able to come up with a long-term solution for funding the agency, and for what is missing from the bill. The general consensus seems to be that 14 months is better than nothing, but a longer funding Bill would have better served the aviation community. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
