Airborne 10.14.16: Solar Impulse UAV?, Bombardier CS300, Spirit Pilots Picket

Also: AW169, Barnstorming, Norwegian Hires, Aviation Design Challenge, Amazon Fine, Alaska Airlines, E-Cig Suit

When the Solar Impulse 2 aircraft completed its circumnavigation of the world earlier this year, we were reminded that the story was not about the airplane; it was about promoting the use of renewable energy.

Now, the focus appears to be changing to the aircraft itself. The French news service AFP reports that Solar Impulse co-founder Andre Borschberg told reporters earlier this week that an unmanned version of Solar Impulse is in the works. EASA has awarded Type Validation to Bombardier's CS300 aircraft, which is a precursor to a first delivery to CS300 launch operator, airBaltic of Latvia. Bombardier's first CS300 aircraft delivery to airBaltic is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016. Bombardier's smaller CS100 airliner, which was awarded Type Certification by Transport Canada in December 2015, and Type Validations by both EASA and the FAA in June 2016, successfully entered service with launch operator SWISS in July 2016. Nearly 100 Spirit Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association recently stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to demonstrate their unity as negotiations for a new contract approach the two-year mark. It’s reported that in July of this year, the pilots requested mediation from the National Mediation Board to assist the parties with the pace of negotiations and bring the first new contract since the 2010 pilot strike. However, negotiations continue to lag, and recently ALPA claims Spirit Airlines management declined meeting dates in December. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
