T-Craft Down On St. Petersburg, FL Golf Course

Pilot And Passenger Uninjured, But Plane Badly Damaged

A 1939 Taylorcraft went down on a golf course in St. Petersburg, FL Saturday, resulting in substantial damage to the airplane, but leaving the pilot and passenger, both teenagers, uninjured.

Television station WTSP reports that, according to the St. Petersburg police department, the plane had departed from Manatee County to Lakeland, FL. The aircraft was flying with two other airplanes, which arrived safely.

According to the SPPD report, the 18-year-old pilot, who has not been identified, experienced mechanical difficulties with his aircraft and declared an emergency. He was diverted by ATC to Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg, but was unable to reach the airport.

He landed on the fairway of the 12th hole of the Lakewood Golf Course. After landing, the plane impacted a tree which severely damaged the left wing of the aircraft.

The good news is the pilot and his teenage passenger walked away from the accident.
